Motivation and barriers of adults to education

Motivation plays an important role in education. Specific feature of adult students is to determine the objective of learning, for example, effort to achieve personal development, welfare and self-fulfilment. The adult must have some benefit from education; it solves his or her current situation, need. The motives of each group are different. There are motivational differences in age, socio-economic status, educational attainment, gender and life circumstances. Regarding age, it can generally be said that young people have a motivation associated with pursuing the profession, while motivation of elderly people is connected more to the way they spend their free time. People of higher age and higher social status are focused on meeting the higher needs according to Maslow hierarchy.
